James Chaney Memorial Site
Description
Visit the grave site of slain civil rights worker James Chaney, who volunteered along with Michael Schwerner and Andrew Goodman to aid in the registration of African-American voters as part of the Freedom Summer Movement of 1964. Chaney's grave, located at Okatibbee Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, is the final stop on the Meridian Civil Rights Trail.
Directions: From I20/59, take exit 150 (29th Avenue). Turn south on 29th/31st Ave./Martin Luther King Drive and follow signs. Road will end at intersection with Valley Road. Turn left on Valley Road and continue approximately 2.7 miles to Fish Lodge Road. Turn left and continue approximately .9 miles to grave site on right.
