Marion C.S.A. Cemetery

Like many Confederate cemeteries, Marion C.S.A. Cemetery serves as a tribute to fallen Confederate States of America soldiers who were buried in and around this area. Most of those honored died at a nearby hospital. Memorial markers for 170 soldiers are here, arranged in 17 rows of 10. Each marker, designated by the Sons of Confederate Veterans, is inscribed with the words "Unknown Confederate Soldier."

Because the hardships of war prevented the digging of individual graves, the majority of the dead were hastily buried in several mass graves, although a few individual graves do exist. The cemetery was later placed among those gravesites.

The names of 47 of the soldiers honored here have been extracted from records at the National Archives and are engraved on a large granite marker near the cemetery entrance. The Confederate flag flies overhead. The Sons of Confederate Veterans, General Nathan Bedford Forrest Camp 1649, maintains the cemetery and conducts annual memorial services.
